Zettlr for Mac (2026): Free Academic Editor vs a Reader

Zettlr is a free, open-source Markdown editor for academic writing, with Zotero citations and Pandoc export. Verified October 2026, plus Zettlr vs Obsidian.

MacMD Viewer is a native SwiftUI Markdown viewer — open any .md file and it renders instantly with Mermaid diagrams, syntax highlighting, and a QuickLook extension for Finder. No Chromium, no subscription, no account. $19.99 one-time.

Verdict

If you write papers, theses or long-form research in Markdown, use Zettlr: it is free, open source (GPL-3.0), and built around citations and Pandoc export. MacMD Viewer does not compete with that. It is a native, read-only Mac viewer with Finder Quick Look, Mermaid and PDF export, $19.99 one-time on macOS 14+, for reading and sharing the drafts you write in Zettlr or anywhere else.

Short version: if you write academic papers in Markdown, Zettlr is the right tool and it costs nothing. If you want a native Mac reader next to it, for Quick Look in Finder, a review window that cannot change your draft, and a one-click PDF, that is what I built MacMD Viewer for: see pricing, $19.99 one-time.

Every Zettlr fact on this page was verified 9 October 2026 at zettlr.com, its documentation and its GitHub releases.

What Is Zettlr?

Zettlr is a free, open-source Markdown editor aimed at academic and long-form writing. It is licensed under GPL-3.0 and funded by donations. It works on plain Markdown files in folders you pick, runs on Mac, Windows and Linux, and is built on Electron.

The current version is 4.8.0, released 18 September 2026 (GitHub releases). On the Mac it needs macOS 12 or newer, and the download page offers separate Apple Silicon and Intel builds.

What sets it apart is the academic plumbing:

  • Citations. Zettlr reads a CSL JSON or BibTeX library exported from Zotero, JabRef or Juris-M. Its docs recommend Zotero with the Better BibTeX plugin, set to keep the export updated. You pick from over 9,000 citation styles.
  • Export. Export runs through Pandoc, with profiles for Word, OpenDocument, PDF, slides (Beamer, reveal.js, PowerPoint) and more. Fully featured PDF export needs a separate PDF engine installed; Zettlr offers a "Simple PDF" option for people who cannot install one.
  • Mermaid. The homepage states that Mermaid charts render in the editor, so you see diagram errors while writing.

What Is MacMD Viewer?

MacMD Viewer is a native SwiftUI app for macOS 14 and later that does one thing: render Markdown files for reading. There is no editor. It renders headings, tables, syntax-highlighted code and Mermaid diagrams, it reloads when another app saves the file, and it exports a PDF in the theme you are reading in.

It also installs a Quick Look extension: select a .md file in Finder, press Space, and the rendered document appears without opening any app. Mermaid renders there too (Mermaid support).

Where Zettlr Wins

I build MacMD Viewer, so here is the honest part first. For writing a paper, Zettlr is better on every axis that matters:

  • It writes. MacMD Viewer is read-only.
  • Citations and bibliographies. MacMD Viewer has none. If your draft relies on a Zotero library, only Zettlr will turn citation keys into a formatted bibliography.
  • Export formats. Zettlr exports to Word, OpenDocument, slides and more through Pandoc. MacMD Viewer exports PDF, and that is the list.
  • Price. Zettlr is free. MacMD Viewer is $19.99.
  • Reach. Zettlr runs on macOS 12 and on Windows and Linux. MacMD Viewer needs macOS 14 and is Mac-only.

If you need one app to write and cite, install Zettlr and stop here.

Where a Reader Helps

Writing and reading a draft are different jobs. When I review something long, I want a clean page, not the editing surface I wrote it in. That is the gap MacMD Viewer fills next to Zettlr:

  • Quick Look in Finder. Zettlr does not document a Finder Quick Look extension. With MacMD Viewer installed, Space on any .md file shows it rendered, which helps when you are hunting through a folder of chapters.
  • A read-only review window. Open the chapter in MacMD Viewer beside Zettlr. Save in Zettlr and the viewer reloads, while your cursor stays in the editor and the viewer cannot change a word.
  • A quick PDF for a supervisor or co-author. File > Export as PDF keeps Mermaid diagrams and highlighted code, and needs no extra engine. For the final submission with citations formatted, export from Zettlr; for "can you look at this section", the viewer's PDF is faster.
  • Native app. MacMD Viewer is SwiftUI, a 5.4 MB download. Zettlr is an Electron app.

Neither app locks your files. Both work on the same plain .md files, which is why the pairing works.

Zettlr vs Obsidian

Searchers often weigh these two. Both work on local Markdown files, so the choice is about the job.

Zettlr is built for writing that ends in a document: citations from your reference manager, citation styles, and Pandoc export profiles out of the box. It is free and open source.

Obsidian stores notes locally as plain-text Markdown and is built for connecting them: links between notes, a graph view, and thousands of community plugins. It is free for personal use without limits; Sync costs $4 per month billed annually (obsidian.md/pricing).

Plenty of people keep research notes in Obsidian and write the paper in Zettlr. My Obsidian comparison covers how a reader fits next to it, and the best Markdown note apps for Mac roundup puts Zettlr among the alternatives.

Who Should Choose Which?

Choose Zettlr if you write papers, theses or reports in Markdown, need citations and a bibliography, export to Word or slides, use Windows or Linux too, or run macOS 12 or 13.

Choose MacMD Viewer in addition if you want Finder Quick Look on your Markdown, a read-only window to review drafts, or a fast PDF with Mermaid diagrams to share, and you are on macOS 14 or later. It is $19.99 once, with a 14-day refund: see pricing.

Methodology

I build and sell MacMD Viewer, so weigh this page with that in mind. Checked on 9 October 2026:

  • Version and date: the GitHub API for Zettlr/Zettlr latest release (v4.8.0, published 18 September 2026, arm64 and x64 DMGs).
  • Licence: the repository's LICENSE file (GNU GPL version 3).
  • Price, Electron, citations, Pandoc export, Mermaid, platforms: zettlr.com and its download page (macOS 12 or newer).
  • Citation workflow and PDF requirement: the Zettlr documentation.
  • Quick Look: Zettlr's site and docs say nothing about a Finder Quick Look extension; I did not inspect its app bundle, so this page says "not documented" rather than "no".
  • Obsidian: obsidian.md and its pricing page.
  • MacMD Viewer: the app's own build and the site's product facts.

I did not test Zettlr's citation or export features by hand; those rows come from its documentation.

Both apps render CommonMark-compliant Markdown with GitHub Flavored Markdown extensions including tables and task lists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Zettlr free?

Yes. Zettlr is free and open-source software under the GPL-3.0 licence, supported by donations. There is no paid tier. Verified on zettlr.com and the Zettlr GitHub repository, 9 October 2026.

Does Zettlr run natively on Apple Silicon?

Yes. Zettlr 4.8.0 ships separate DMGs for Apple Silicon (arm64) and Intel, and needs macOS 12 or newer. It is an Electron app, so it is native to the chip but not a native AppKit or SwiftUI app.

Zettlr or Obsidian for academic writing?

Zettlr, if citations and export are the job: it reads your Zotero library and exports through Pandoc out of the box. Obsidian is a better fit for a linked knowledge base with plugins. Both work on plain Markdown files, so you can try one without locking your notes in.

Can I use MacMD Viewer with Zettlr?

Yes. Write in Zettlr, and open the same .md file in MacMD Viewer to read it in a clean window that reloads on save, preview it in Finder with Quick Look, or export a PDF with Mermaid diagrams to share a draft. MacMD Viewer never edits the file.
