Telescopo (by Bad Command AI) is one app, not two. There is a single Mac App Store listing — id6747908871, titled Telescopo Markdown Studio, version 7.1.3 shipped 8 September 2026 — and it is a free download with in-app purchases. Older names for the same listing ("Telescopo Markdown Viewer", "Telescopo Universal Viewer") still circulate in search results, which is why it is often mistaken for a separate free product.

How you pay for it changed this year. In July 2026 telescopo.app described a free reading tier and a paid tier from $4.99 a month. On 17 October 2026 the site describes this instead:

• A 7-day free trial of full access, with no payment required.
• Lifetime Access for $49.99 one-time after the trial.
• Setapp: Telescopo Markdown Studio is listed on Setapp.

The App Store listing still shows three in-app purchases: Telescopo Markdown Studio $49.99, Monthly Access $4.99 and Yearly Access $29.99. The site no longer describes a free reading tier.

What full access includes, per telescopo.app: split-view editing with live preview, 200+ templates, Mermaid and ZenUML diagrams with SVG export, math equations, PDF export, iCloud Sync, Live Monitoring of files changed by other apps and AI tools, the Quick Section Navigator (its document outline), 30+ themes, a private on-device AI assistant on Apple Intelligence Macs, and more than 70 file formats including SVG, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML and code files.

That is a genuinely strong feature list, and it is actively maintained. Being on the Mac App Store also matters on managed Macs where IT allows App Store installs and nothing else. The trade-offs show up when your job is specifically reading Markdown fast.

MacMD Viewer: The Focused Mac Markdown Reader#

MacMD Viewer is a native SwiftUI app built for macOS 14 and later. It does one thing: render Markdown beautifully and get out of the way. The download is 5.4 MB with no bundled browser engine. It watches files for live reload, renders Mermaid 11.13.0 diagrams inline, ships 12 document themes and a document outline, and ships a Quick Look extension so you can preview any .md file in Finder by pressing Space.

Feature-by-Feature Breakdown#

QuickLook in Finder#

This is the clearest difference. MacMD Viewer ships a Quick Look extension: press Space on any .md file in Finder, Spotlight, or an Open/Save dialog, and macOS renders it inline — headings, code, tables, Mermaid — without launching any app.

Neither Telescopo's site nor its App Store listing mentions a Quick Look extension (checked 17 October 2026), and earlier checks found that it opens Markdown inside the app only. Mermaid Diagrams#

MacMD Viewer bundles Mermaid 11.13.0 and renders Mermaid flowcharts, sequence diagrams, state diagrams and Gantt charts inline — in the app and in Quick Look previews too. If your .md files come from AI agents (which often embed Mermaid), it just works with no setup.

macOS Compatibility#

MacMD Viewer runs on macOS 14 Sonoma and later. Telescopo requires macOS 15 Sequoia, and its on-device AI needs a Mac that supports Apple Intelligence. If you're on Sonoma — or an older Intel Mac that tops out below Sequoia — MacMD Viewer runs where Telescopo won't install.

Telescopo opens far more than Markdown: its site counts more than 70 file formats, including SVG, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML and code files. That breadth is the point — one app instead of several. If you want that, it is a real strength and MacMD Viewer has no answer to it.

But for reading Markdown, breadth you don't use is a busier interface than the task needs. MacMD Viewer deliberately does one format well, which keeps it small and distraction-free.

Editing, AI and Sync#

Telescopo is an editor with split-view live preview, 200+ templates, an on-device AI assistant that summarises and answers questions about the open document, iCloud Sync, Live Monitoring for files changed outside the app, and links between local Markdown files. That is a legitimately capable feature set, and none of it is available in MacMD Viewer at any price.

MacMD Viewer is read-only by design — it never modifies your files and assumes you already write in VS Code, Cursor, Obsidian or vim. It pairs with your editor through live file watching. If you want one app that reads and writes, Telescopo is the better buy; if you want a reader that stays out of the way of the editor you already use, that is MacMD Viewer's whole job.

Privacy and Analytics#

Neither app is analytics-free, and it is worth being precise. When this page was checked on 29 July 2026, Telescopo's marketing pages said "100% Offline, Zero Tracking" — but its App Store privacy label declared that diagnostic data, including crash data and other diagnostic data, is collected and used for Analytics and App Functionality, not linked to your identity. MacMD Viewer is in a similar position: the direct and Homebrew versions send anonymous usage signals through TelemetryDeck, which you can turn off in Settings, and your files never leave the Mac. Neither app requires a login and neither uploads your files.
